The 2026 World Cup is set to be the biggest one yet, with FIFA reportedly ready to approve 48 team expansion.
The original plan was to have 16 three-team groups at the finals hosted in United States, Canada and Mexico, but that plan has been scrapped with the FIFA Council set to approve the new format at a meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, later on Tuesday.
Group winners and runners-up, along with the eight best third-placed teams, would then advance to a brand new last-32 stage.
The 2026 tournament will be the longest in history with a whopping 104 games over 39 days.
